Pattern: Sock Monkee 2.0

Lacing Stich=technique of hand sewing achieved by inserting needle into the edge of the wrong side of the fabric, pulling the needle out of the right side of the fabric, and alternating this stitch between two separate edges. It encloses the edges of a seam.
Purl encroachment: sl1 stich from the left needle to the right needle, lift the stitch below the next stitch onto the left needle. Slip previously slipped stitch back onto the left needle and purl the two together.
Knit encroachment: sl1 stich from the left needle to the right needle, lift the stitch below the next stitch onto the left needle. Slip previously slipped stitch back onto the left needle and knit the two together.
Switching yarn: The easiest way to achieve this is to tie the new color to the old color loosely as close to the knitting as you can, and continue knitting. After you have completed a couple of rows, untie the not if necessary and adjust the stitches. Tie off tightly.

Legs (make 2): Row 1: *Using the Provisional Cast On Technique and with Y1 cast on 15 turn, Row 2: P15 turn, Row 3: (begin short rows ) Sl1 k13 turn, Row 4: Sl1 p12 turn, Row 5: Sl1 k11 turn, Row 6: Sl1 p10 turn, Row 7: Sl1 k9 turn, Row 8: Sl1 p8 turn, Row 9: Sl1 k7 k enc turn, Row 10: Sl1 p8 p enc turn, Row 11: Sl1 k9 k enc turn, Row 12: Sl1 p10 p enc turn, Row 13: Sl1 k11 k enc turn, Row 14: Sl1 p13 turn (Do not p enc), Row15: Sl1 k14 do not k enc, do not turn. (begin working in the round) Pick up 15 stitches along the cast on edge, Rounds 1-17: knit, Rounds 18-58: Switch to Y2 and knit, redistribute the stitches so the next 15 are on one needle.*

(Leg 1) Cut yarn leaving a 6-inch tail and thread it through remaining stitches but do not pull tight because you’ll be removing it and placing the stitches back on a needle later on.
(Leg 2) Repeat from * to *. Cut yarn leaving just enough to attach Y1. Thread a separate piece of scrap yarn into the remaining stitches and remember you’ll be putting them back on a needle later on.

Using Y2, k45 stitches (Do not worry about the hole between the legs, you will stitch it closed once the body is completed.) You have now completed Round 1 and should be at the midway point of the back of the monkee/bunnee. Rounds 2-50: knit. Cut yarn leaving a 24-inch tail and thread it through all stitches removing them from the knitting needles as you go. Stuff with fiber-fill and be careful to work out any lumps. Pull yarn tail tight so that the opening is approximately 1.5 inches in diameter. Tie off but do not cut the yarn off yet. You will use it to stitch the head into place later on.

Head:
* For the head you will essentially be making a short, fat sock, working from the "toe-up". You will use it to stitch the head into place . *When stuffing the snout for the monkee, use a little more stuffing to make the snout a project forward from the face.

Switch to Y2 Rounds 16-56: Knit. Cut yarn leaving a 6-inch tail and thread it through remaining stitches but do not pull tight. Stuff with fiber-fill and be careful to work out any lumps, use the lacing stitch to close open end, it should measure about ¾ inch. Do not cut yarn and set aside for now.

Eyes (make 2): Using Y3, CO 16 stitches, join ends and knit in the round, Row 1: knit, Row 2: [k2tog] 8 times, Row 3: knit. Cut yarn leaving a 6-inch tail and using a tapestry needle thread it through the stitches, removing them from the knitting needles as you go. Pull tight enough to close any gap, and tie off on the wrong side of the fabric.

Ears (make 2): Row 1: Using Y2 and the Provisional Cast On Technique, CO 16, turn, Row 2: p16, turn, Row 3: (begin short rows) sl1, k14, turn, Row 4: sl1, p13, turn, Row 5: sl1, k12, turn, Row 6: sl1, p11, turn, Row 7: sl1, k10, turn, Row 8: sl1, p9, turn, Row 9: sl1 k8, turn, Row 10: sl1, p7, p enc, turn, Row 11: sl1, k8, k enc, turn, Row 12: sl1, p9, p enc, turn, Row 13: sl1, k10, k enc, turn, Row 14: sl1, p11, p enc, turn, Row 15: sl1, k12, k enc, turn, Row 16: Sl1, p14, do not p enc, turn, Row 17: Sl1, k15, do not k enc, do not turn. (begin working in the round) Pick up 16 stitches along the cast on edge, knit 5 rows. Cut yarn leaving a 6-inch tail and using a darning needle thread it through the stitches, removing them from the knitting needle as you go. Stuff with small amount of fiber-fill and be careful to work out any lumps. Pull yarn tail just tight enough to make the ear slightly rounded on the small edge, stitch closed using the lacing stitch described above. Do not cut yarn and set aside for now.

Tail: Using Y2, CO 12, join ends and begin knitting in the round. Knit approximately 80 rows or until tail is about 7 or 8 inches long. Switch to Y1 and knit 15 rows. Cut yarn leaving a 6-inch tail and using a tapestry needle thread it through the stitches, removing them from the knitting needles as you go. Pull tight enough to close any gap, and tie off on the wrong side of the fabric.

Assembly: *Use the lacing stitch for all assembly work and use any available yarn tails to as much as possible. Stitch the ears to the sides of the face between the color change lines. Line the stuffed arms up with legs and stitch them to the neck line. Arrange the head on the body and tack into place with a couple of scrap pieces of yarn, then stitch into place. To stitch on the tail on, locate the color change line on the back of the body, and stitch it into place there. Tack the eyes into place securely using the needle and thread. Emboider facial features or feel free to embellish as you wish (See picture). Voila! You now have your very own Sock Monkee 2.0!
